Why do you need this antenna when the NOAA radio already has an antenna? There are several reasons:
  • You do not live close enough to a NOAA station to have reliable reception. You can hear the broadcast, but there is noise and sometimes it fades in and out. Remember these are VHF frequencies, which are "line of sight" signals and there are lots of causes for interference.
  • During severe weather alerts, the weather service sends out a tone to activate the radio....unless you have good reception, your radio will not "hear" the tone and the radio will not "turn on" and you won't hear the warning from the weather service. This is particularly true in rural areas. This antenna placed outside, or even inside, will greatly improve your reception of the severe weather alert. (See the manual for your particular radio for instructions on how to activate this tone alert)
  • The antenna can be mounted outside which will provide much better reception. Remember the "line of sight" rule on VHF...the higher an antenna is...the better the reception.
  • There are 7 NOAA frequencies and you want to be able to hear more than one. When mounted outside, this antenna will provide much better reception. There is no guarantee you will hear other ones outside your area, but the chances are much better than with the stock antenna on the NOAA radio.
  • This antenna is tuned to receive the NOAA Weather Frequencies of 162.400 - 162.550 and can be connected to the NOAA Weather radios via the external antenna connector on the back of the radio. (See photo) Most WX radios have an RCA connector, so an RCA/UHF adapter will be needed to connect to the antenna. (See photo) These are readily available from other vendors on eBay. If your connector is different, send me a photo and I will let you know what type of adapter is needed.
What is needed to connect the radio to this antenna?
  • The antenna has a standard SO239 connector (aka UHF connector). The coax you will use has a PL259 connector which will connect to the antenna. See photos.
  • Since the NOAA radio probably has an RCA connector, you will need an adapter to connect to the SO239 on the coax. These are available from other vendors on eBay. Double check the back of your NOAA radio to make sure it has an RCA connector. See photos...Contact me if you have a question as to what you need.
Why is this antenna collapsible and can be broken down into two parts?
  • This is the same antenna as the 2 meter and MURS that I have listed, which are used for transmitting and in many cases are used for various activities such as Public Service. Having the antenna collapsible makes it easy to transport, etc. However, for this version, it will probably be mounted in a "permanent" location and being collapsible is not needed...HOWEVER, it does making shipping much easier and less expensive so I am continuing to make it this way. The connector can be tightened with a wrench so, in effect, it becomes a one piece antenna.
